Clipper or trimmer: which do you need?
Clippers and trimmers look similar, and shop listings often mix them up. The short version: a clipper cuts hair to a set length across a wide area, and a trimmer works on edges, small areas and beards. Here is how to tell which one your routine needs, using models from our range.
When a clipper is the right tool
Choose a clipper for whole-head haircuts. The Kemei KM-809A (Rs 2,450) is cordless with four combs from 3 to 12 mm. The Gemei GM-6050 (Rs 2,300) has a titanium blade and a taper lever. The VGR V-055 (Rs 4,200) adds an LCD that shows battery and speed, and the Remington HC5150 (Rs 11,500) works corded or cordless.
When a trimmer is the right tool
Choose a trimmer for edges, beards and the neckline. The Kemei KM-2299 (Rs 2,650) is a wide T-blade for line-ups, and the Kemei KM-3909 (Rs 2,950) sets twenty lengths on a dial. The VGR V-937 (Rs 3,300) has a T-blade and a vintage metal body. For a dial with nineteen lengths, the Panasonic ER-GB43 is Rs 9,800.
Nose and ear trimmers are a third type
Small rotary trimmers handle the nose, ears and eyebrows. The Kemei KM-6330 (Rs 950) runs on one AA battery. The Philips NT1650 (Rs 3,900) has a protective guard and is battery powered and washable. Neither is meant for haircuts or beards, so keep one of these for the small jobs.
Shavers are different again
A shaver is for the face, not the head. The Kemei KM-1102 (Rs 3,400) is a three-head rotary shaver for wet or dry use, with a pop-up sideburn trimmer. The Philips OneBlade QP2724 (Rs 13,900) trims, edges and shaves with one blade, and comes with a spare blade and three stubble combs.
A simple way to decide
- If you cut hair at home, buy a clipper first.
- If you only need neckline and beard work, buy a trimmer.
- If you want both, buy the clipper and add a small trimmer later.
- If the face is the job, buy a shaver and skip the clipper.
